The Food and Drug Administration has approved the first of several new drugs that the drug industry is expected to be able to treat for erectile dysfunction, the latest in a series of reports about how drugmakers have been operating in recent years.
The reports include a report on Thursday, Feb. 15 that detailed drugmakers and medical researchers in Georgia, who have been trying to find a way to treat erectile dysfunction. The report is based on interviews with officials from the Georgia Department of Economic and Social Affairs, the Department of Health and Human Services, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation and the Georgia Institute of Regenerative Medicine.

The new report includes details of two of the new drugs that have been approved in Georgia: Viagra, the brand of the popular erectile dysfunction drug used to treat high blood pressure, and Cialis, the generic version of the drug that has been approved for erectile dysfunction.
Viagra has been approved by the FDA for erectile dysfunction in some states, but the drug is being marketed as a "little blue pill" for use in men and in women.
"This is a very unusual development," said Dr. Michael Pearson, the director of Georgia's Department of Clinical Services. "This is the first of many new drugs approved by the FDA for erectile dysfunction.
"The first of the new drugs will be approved by the FDA for erectile dysfunction, and they will be used in the treatment of erectile dysfunction in men. It will not be used in women," he said.

Viagra (sildenafil) is used to treat erectile dysfunction. Erectile dysfunction is the inability to get or keep an erection for satisfactory sexual activity in men, also known as impotence. Sildenafil belongs to a class of medications called phosphodiesterase type5 (PDE5) inhibitors.
